When my husband broke the news, that he was getting deployed, I tried to handle it a little better than the first. But every deployment is hard no matter what. Since this was his third deployment this time around I wanted to remind him that no matter how far he was, we were going to be ok.
Is only us that feels that emptiness when they get deployed so do our spouses. Some men hide it better than others, but oh do they feel it. This time around when I sent him care packages I also wanted to throw in cute gestures. So, of course, I went to Pinterest to get some ideas and I compiled, “Open When” letters to my Deployed Spouse. I won’t sugarcoat it, this is time-consuming, but I made it work and so can you. It’s a cute gesture, and he loved it.
- I bought a cute little package of blank inside cards and with matching envelope at Target at their $1, $3 and $5 section.
- At Dollar Tree (Love this store.) I got a cute box big enough so the small envelopes can fit. Since I’m a working mother, I had to find the time to sit and write as much as I could. I didn’t write a book on the cards I kept it short and sweet, but I wrote as much as I could.
- I bought colored index cards and wrote quotes from bible verse and I included a small bible I got from the Yellow Ribbon Ceremony.
(Not all of us practice the same religious belief but if it works for you this is just an idea)

At first was hard to come up with topics but after searching found some ideas and incorporated a few of my own.
“Open First”– This is basically the rules on how and when to read the letters.
Here are the different topics I used; “Open When”

- You are missing us
- It’s your birthday
- It’s Valentines Day
- It’s Christmas
- It’s New Years

- You need a kiss
- You get homesick
- You are stressed
- You are sad
- You feel overwhelmed
- You are sick
- You are mad
- You need to vent
- You need a laugh
- You need to hear how much I love you
There are a ton of titles, that you can search on Pinterest. You can make it fun, romantic or theme, however, you like. It’s a cute gesture, and you can write many things as you like. Quotes, bibles verse, jokes, pictures, and love letter are a great way to get you started.
