Custom Hair Color
I’m not a big fan of hair color, because in my early 20’s I severely damaged my hair by doing so. I would religiously dye my hair at the salon and when I couldn’t afford it I would use it out of drugstore boxes. I was that chick that never lasted more than a month with the same hair color, until one day I got into one of my “I want a new hair color ” moods and decided to get highlights. For this change, I had to go to the salon, boy what BIG huge MISTAKE. Not all highlights are made the same and after that experience, my hair was so badly damaged. I was forced to cut my hair because my hair had lots of breakages, it was dry and dull. Fast forward, it took me nearly three years to grow my hair healthy with deep conditioner, no hair dyes, and without the use of excess hot tools.

So last year for my birthday I decided to get my hair colored. Since I had more than 10 years I didn’t color my hair I didn’t feel comfortable doing it myself and went to a salon. It was like a 4+ hour process that cost me an arm and a leg. I loved the color but after the first washed the color I paid so much money for literary washed off. This was very frustrating, not only did I spend so much money but the number of hours I was at the salon. For a busy mom like me, I can’t afford to waste time and sit in a salon for hours for the outcome to be unsatisfying.
The color I was aiming for was a reddish tone, but after a few washes, the color didn’t look like it first did. I wasn’t happy at all so I decided to go back to my original dark color. When the first wave of the pandemic hit our state, all the salons had to close so I had no choice to wait until they open. Then one morning as I scrolled into my Instagram feed I stumbled upon eSalon and was very intrigued. I did my research and learned they had very good reviews, so I decided to give it a try and see if it was worth it.

How Do eSalon Works?
On their website you will be prompted to fill out a questionnaire about your natural hair color history, hair texture, if your hair is dry or oily if it’s currently dyed, desire color, and maintenance. It’s optional to send a picture of your hair color so the colorist can see it and work from there. I highly recommend sending a good picture of your hair color so the colorist is able to match the shade you want and there’s no mistake. Once you picked the desired color you’ll have access to a virtual colorist who will then customize the formula to your preference and desire based on what you told them. You will receive an email from the colorist to confirm your selection and if you approve, the kit will be mailed out. If by any chance the colorist has any concerns about the color you chose, she will let you know and you can decide.
What’s Included in The Hair Color Kit?
Once you receive your personalized kit, the box includes step-by-step instructions, the basic hair color, a mixer bottle with your name on it, two pairs of gloves, a stain guard packette, stain remover wipes, tint brush, and a packet of conditioner.

The packaging is neatly packed and customized with your name, making it more personal. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow and it’s nearly impossible to not achieve it. But you have to follow each step as instructed. I chose the color Darkest Brown and the instructions in my kit were set for 15 mins. I also had a few grays I needed to cover.
The Results
The color came out beautiful, better than I expected. I loved the finished product, my hair looked healthy, shiny and the color, a bold dark brown, just like I wanted. Within 15 minutes the color set on my hair, which I was very impressed with.

I like that it didn’t have any strong chemical smell and that’s a plus. Depending on your hair length and texture the instruction states that whatever hair color is leftover fill with water and lather into the hair. When doing this step, be extremely careful how you’re going to lather your hair. Whether you’ll be using the sink or showers if is not done correctly this can be messy. You don’t want to stain your shower curtain or wall. The shampoo and conditioner smelled very good and left my hair very hydrated and shiny. Each packet had enough for two washes. I liked the shampoo that I ended purchasing the bottle of the shampoo and conditioner. I advise getting the eSalon color tools, especially if you are a beginner and will be coloring your hair alone, this tools kit will come in handy.

You can try your first customized hair color kit for $15, and if you simply love it you can choose the hair color kit subscription and get 20% off all future orders. What I like about the subscription service is that you have the option to choose how many weeks you want to be spaced in between each shipment. The quality of their pigment is way better than the salon and drugstore brands. The smell wasn’t overpowering and it’s very easy to use. After the process, my hair was super hydrated, shiny, and looked healthy. I like the interaction with the eSalon colorist to make sure I got the perfect shade since I was going from very light to super dark.
